Do you believe?

Jesus is very concerned about belief. Today I was asked to give a five minute talk at a communion service. To be honest, I went in there completely unprepared, but I did know what I wanted to talk about. It’s the words of Jesus in John 11. Lazarus has died, and Martha comes up to Jesus distraught, because she has lost her brother. Jesus calms her, and tells her that he will rise again. But before this happens, he asks a question which only required a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer.

Do you believe?

This question comes after Jesus’ famous words in John 11:25-26.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Do you believe this?

This Easter time, this is the question Jesus is asking you. He isn’t asking for money, good works, ritual or religion. He’s asking for belief.

And this belief brings everlasting life, even though you die.
