The Church Mouse published an article yesterday about a public outcry at the supposed teaching of Creationism in a science lesson. This has sparked big debate and lots of protest amongst those who are less tolerant of certain religious beliefs. The British Centre for Science Education has published an article calling for this so called science lesson and urges those standing with them to sign an online petition.
Unfortunately, The Church Mouse has found out and stated that this ‘science lesson’ turned out to be an RE lesson, whereby a creationist debated with a scientist. Moreover, creationism is on the national RE syllabus in the United Kingdom.
What is this world coming to?! I completely agree with Mouse that this sort of drama is getting way out of hand, and if creationists aren’t allowed to debate with evolution scientists in front of a bunch of 16 year olds, then where is the line drawn?

My boyfriend has just finished a dissertation on teenagers’ views on human origins and in his research discovered that it is no longer in the syllabus to have to suggest any views in science lessons other than evolution. It used to say that they could say that there is debate about it but now they don’t even have to say that they can just teach it as fact, which it quite clearly isn’t

And it also boils down to the fact that not EVERYONE will believe all aspects of scientific fact. Given the track record of science, it is constantly changing it’s ideas.
I maintain that kids should be given a variety of options, not hidden from all possibilities and left to make their own conclusions from their own thinking. Yes, we can argue our case, but to censor different beliefs or different theories in school whether it be in RE, Science, History on ANY subject is not fair.
It’s important that we look out for the child’s development. And part of that development is recognising the beliefs of others, and that many people do discard evolution as fact.
I for one would welcome such a debate. It would show to these impressionable young people the stupidity of Religon in comparision to Science. How can you feel that because a book says something it must be true. Open your eyes, men are not born to be sheep

I am a Zoroastrian by birth but studied in a convent school where christianity was taught to us in “moral science classes” . This neither made me want to change my religion nor did it have any adverse impact on me. In fact I would go so far as to state that it made me grow up to be a better adult with a healthy respect and tolerance for all the different religions of the world. It made me appreciate the beauty and yes similarity in all religions. No matter whether all the people of the world wish to believe it or not….that there is and always will be only one God and that all the fighting is in vain for the truths of the world will remain forever unchangeable. So it is and so it shall forever be.
