The ‘Slut Gene’ and a get out of jail free card for Sexual Promiscuity.

According to a recent study, biological scientists have found that certain people may have a ‘Slut Gene’ which causes them to sleep around more.

Lead researcher, Justin Garcia has told press that the DRD4 gene found in individuals is part of the reason as to why certain people have short term relationships, sleep around and are generally more promiscuous.

Sharing his findings, Garcia has been reported to have said,

The motivation seems to stem from a system of pleasure and reward, which is where the release of dopamine comes in. In cases of uncommitted sex, the risks are high, the rewards substantial and the motivation variable — all elements that ensure a dopamine ‘rush.’”

The study that he administered took DNA samples from 181 young adults. Garcia concluded that those with the gene were twice as likely to engage in uncommitted sex.

What we found was that individuals with a certain variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to have a history of uncommitted sex, including one-night stands and acts of infidelity.

I don’t know whether Garcia went on to warn that this gene (if it has been proven to aid in promiscuity) was no excuse for such behaviour, but I’m certainly going to make that point.

When dealing with sex and relationships, we’re not just dealing with chemical reactions and procreation. We’re dealing with feelings, emotions, hurt, pain and love.

I’m sure that this gene is just an aiding factor as to why people are promiscuous, as opposed to it being the primary factor as to why people cheat and sleep around. It’s an absolute disgrace for someone to dismiss their horrible actions as being uncontrollable due to a variant of a gene which is also linked to other conditions such as ADHD, schizophrenia, Parkinsons disease, bipolar disorder, addictive behaviors, and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating. In fact, the gene is also linked to smoking, gambling, being politically liberal and so on and so on.

I have to be honest, I’m not sure that we can just dismiss choices based on genes, that we have no control over what we do, which seems to be the bottom line of this ‘finding’. It seems to insinuate that some people will have little choice in determining whether to be politically liberal, whether to gamble or not, and whether to sleep around or not. I was always taught in school that we always have to make choices, and we can fight against undesirable thoughts.

Yet I’m sure the Facebook pages and groups will start popping up and the jokes will roll in by people in an attempt to shake off any guilt and brush under the carpet that they have.

There is no excuse for playing around with love, and for cheating, sleeping around and general promiscuity.

What do you think?
