Heaven isn’t for adults.

Heaven is in fact for children. Today at morning prayer we discussed something that I’d been thinking about for a long while. Jesus said…

Unless you become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 18:3)

What does being a child look like if you’re an adult?

It means a few things…

  • Being dependent upon God – in this day and age we are constantly told that we must be independent. Whilst this is true, I think some people chuck the baby out of the bath water and forget that we were made for relationships; this is how humanity thrives – not by being independent entities but living in community. The Christian faith centres around an intimate relationship – one between creator and created, God and man. If we can’t be dependent upon God then we most certainly won’t be able to enter the kingdom.
  • Being simple – not in a dumb sense, but in a way that doesn’t complicate what God wants for our lives. It means listening to him, being taught by him and being humble. Children aren’t bogged down with the complexity of life, but rather wait upon their parents to sort things out and help them. Of course, they have responsibility too, but this simpleness also comes under the dependence.

What other child like qualities do you think would help us and equip us for kingdom living? I think one of the most important things that we can take from children is their joy and love…

The children in this artwork do seem full of joy and happiness, going to all sorts of lengths to get to Jesus. Maybe the gospel would be more attractive (I say that hesitantly) if the Christians who already believed it behaved in the same manner as the children in the picture?

Your thoughts please!
