Tomorrow, I will be attending a ‘celebration’. Lucy Edwards, a lady who went to my church died from cancer just a few weeks ago. Her funeral is being held tomorrow. But it isn’t a funeral as such.
For the Christian believer, death is a doorway. It is the doorway to heaven.
Death is a horrible, ugly, nasty and destroying thing. It pierces the heart and tears the soul in two. But for the Christian who’s died, it’s an amazing portal into eternal glory; the unending climax of life; being with Jesus.
Lucy suffered a lot of discomfort while she was ill. There was a lot of pain, there was a lot of crying, there was a lot of sorrow, and at the end, there was death.
But it didn’t end with death! The moment her eyes closed, she was with her Lord. She IS with her Lord. And all those former things have passed away.
People prayed for Lucy to get better and to be healed from the cancer. One may then jump in and say that the praying didn’t work. But it did. You see, Lucy experienced the most wonderful healing! She’s most probably jumping for joy right now, singing away, with a huge smile on her face as she lives in the presence of her Heavenly Father, her Faithful Friend, her Lord and Saviour who gave everything for her so that she could be eternally free.
I will never be able to get my head around this. I can’t explain this with science or evidence, but I can only tell you that this is one of the most real promises to me, and for Lucy, I’m more than 100% sure that it will be the most wonderful living reality for her.
So tomorrow, I’m off to a celebration. And whilst there will be sadness, there will be a real sense of joy at what God has released Lucy from, and what he has brought her in to.
