The key to John Wesley’s success.

Yesterday at Small Group we started a new series in Galatians. We concentrated on the first 10 verses of Chapter 1:

1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2 and all the brothers and sisters with me, To the churches in Galatia: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse! 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Read more

Are you an Evangelical or a Christian?

Posted on by Dean Roberts Posted in Church | 8 Comments

Quite. Or am I being intentionally controversial again? I guess I am, but for good reason. The topic of Church Unity has been coming up again in conversation between people I work with, people I study with, and people who I hang around with. And it seems increasingly more important at the moment. Maybe the church is finally adhering to the doctrine of there being one Church? Or am I being too positive? Read more

Is All Encompassing Anglicanism being taken over by Anglican-Evangelicalism?

Posted on by Dean Roberts Posted in Church, Current Affairs | 1 Comment

A very interesting article has just come out today on The Ecomonist. The original article can be found here.

EVER since the 18th century, England’s established church has harboured a suspicion of religious enthusiasm. Anglicanism’s cosy ubiquity as a reassuring, if vestigial, presence in every English suburb and village is regarded as a defence against the sort of fanaticism that leads to social or ethnic conflict. But every so often in English church history, compromise and emollience have triggered a countervailing reaction: an upsurge in faith of a more passionate kind. Such a change may be under way now.

As the number of people who are actively committed to the Church of England falls, the Read more

Jesus Flunks Evangelism

Posted on by Jailer Posted in Evangelism | Leave a comment

What would you do if someone ran up to you, threw himself to the ground before you, and begged to know how he might be saved?  Surely this is the kind of opportunity every aspiring evangelist must dream of!

So what was Jesus thinking when he engaged this guy? Read more

Recently I read this post from Matthew Paul Turner talking about Michelle Duggar’s “Seven Basic Needs of a Husband”.  It includes:

  1. Details of how a man needs to prove his manliness and asks how a wife can destroy her husband’s manliness.
  2. Ensuring a wife lets her husband hear her praising him to others
  3. Explains how a wife needs to accept her husband as leader, including a wife telling her husband how his *bad* decisions are benefitting her spiritual Read more

How do you present and share the Gospel?

Posted on by Dean Roberts Posted in Evangelism, Salvation, Theology | 6 Comments

I’ve just noticed that a new video is coming into the limelight and is facing speculation, comment and critique. You may remember the “Why I hate religion, but love Jesus” video that I commented on. You can watch the video and read my views on that here. Over the last 24 hours though, a video has gone viral entitled ‘The Gospel Message’. It’s sparked discussion and thought. And now, I’m adding to that discussion. But where the gospel is concerned, it is important for us to think through things, and especially consider how we can communicate the gospel to others in a comprehensive way. Read more

‘Go’ ‘Follow’ ‘Add’ : Reinterpreting the Great Commission for Today

Posted on by Dean Roberts Posted in Church, Evangelism, Mission, New Media and The Digital World, Theology | Leave a comment

Go. Follow. Add.

All three of these words are commonly used in Social Networking. We ‘go’ to webpages. We ‘follow’ people on Twitter. We ‘add’ people on Facebook. Funnily enough, the New Testament talks about all three of these terms. We are to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), we are to tell people to follow Jesus (Matthew 16:24) and that by following Jesus and going to make disciples, numbers are added to the Church daily (Acts 2:47). So how do we fit the mission model found in Matthew 28 to our online presence? Read more

Will the Church please leave the building?

Thinking about the Church, Mission and Discipleship over the last few weeks, there have been two things that have focussed my concentration:

1) The Priesthood of All Believers

2) Future Patterns of Ministry.

Firstly, the Read more

Training for Church Ministry: It’s Essential!

Posted on by Dean Roberts Posted in Church, Mission, Rant!, Serving | 5 Comments

Caution! – This post may be controversial! I’m not claiming to be an expert on this issue. I’m merely a 20 year old theology student who’s being taught by an incredible God about ministry and the path he has called me to for the rest of my life. This post applies to me as much as anyone else! And of course, I may be wrong on this issue – but I shall leave that with you to consider :)

Don’t tell me that someone can go into full time Church ministry without some sort of training. I mean, in the past, people have tried to justify people’s lack of training for ministry because Read more

Why closed church buildings matter to me.

OK, everyone who is a Christian knows that a church isn’t the building. I get that. But the fact is that church buildings are symbols. Symbols of Read more
